From Anfield with Love: What It’s Like Being a Liverpool Fan in 2025

It is a great time to be a Liverpool fan. The echo of "You'll Never Walk Alone" still rises into the sky over Anfield, a defiant, loving chant that unites generations. This generation of fans has a genuine reason for celebration after the Reds dominated the Premier League in the 2024-25 season. 

Following a 5-1 home win over Tottenham, with four rounds left on the schedule, team captain Virgil Van Dijk lifted the Premier League trophy, their only second since the foundation of the league and 20th in England's top-tier football league. It was time for celebration.

What makes this victory even more spectacular is that Liverpool fans came into the season with insecurity. After nine years with the club, manager Jürgen Klopp left Anfield, closing a page of the club's history that every real fan will turn back to with a smile on his face. With Klopp by the sideline, Liverpool won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019, followed by a Premier League victory the following season and the 2022 FA Cup trophy. More importantly, the German manager won the hearts of the fans, who will forever cherish the time Klopp spent at Anfield.

Klopp’s departure left a void that will always be difficult to fill. His charisma and ability to forge deep emotional bonds with fans turned him into a modern legend. Yet, even legends move on, and Liverpool fans had to do the same and search for their new hero.

With such a figure leaving the club, there were many questions coming into this season. Liverpool finished in the top five in the Premier League in the previous four seasons, falling behind Manchester City. No matter how great Klopp was, he simply couldn’t lift the team over the rival, and with him gone, that task seemed unthinkable.

Arne Slot was the chosen one to try to fill Klopp's shoes. Being a young coach who had never coached outside of his native Netherlands, many were sceptical. However, the Dutch manager quickly proved that he was worthy of trust. Slot brought a blend of tactical discipline and a fresh eye for youth development, emphasizing a high-tempo football that maintains the attacking flair Liverpool is known for while adding a bit more defensive structure.

While the change on the bench was inevitable, the Reds kept most of the squad that was together for years, and Slot inherited a rock-solid group of guys who adapted well to his coaching style. 

Beating Ipswich and Brentford to start the season was expected, but when the Reds dominated Manchester United in a 3-0 road win, the fans realized that Slot was here to win. Liverpool won 7 of the first eight games of the Premier League schedule, taking over the top of the standings and never looking back. However, no matter how sweet the Premier League victory was, there is a bitter taste since this squad could have won more than one trophy. They were dominant in the Champions League group stage, winning the first seven games while keeping a clean sheet in five of them. They were seen as the favourites in the Round of 16 matchups against PSG, especially after winning the first leg, 1-0, in Paris. However, they could not close it out at Anfield and lost in the penalty shootout. The loss to Plymouth in the Round of 32 of the FA Cup was a huge blow, and the Reds fell short in the EFL Cup Final against Newcastle.

The season was far from perfect, but winning the Premier League is something these fans have felt only twice in the last 35 years. No matter how great Klopp was, Slot showed what he is made of, and the Reds fans can be happy about the future. 

Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk are the heart and soul of the squad and will stay at Anfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave the only team he has ever played for, and there is no doubt that more changes will follow. Slot will have his call in the roster management, and there is no doubt that every player he will target would love to put on the red jersey. 

The players come and go, but Liverpool fans will always be there for the club. Regardless of the results, Anfield will always be packed, and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is the most famous football anthem.
